Bad news emerges for Isaac Schmidt’s loan move to Werder Bremen

Leeds United should consider pulling the plug as Isaac Schmidt is set to sign for Werder Bremen this transfer window.

The 25-year-old has found life difficult in LS11 after joining from St Gallen last summer, and was hardly used by the Whites in the Championship.

Schmidt’s chances of making Switzerland’s World Cup squad hinge on him getting regular game time in the upcoming campaign.

Werder have agreed a loan deal for Schmidt, but the West Yorkshire outfit may need to have a rethink due to the Bundesliga outfit’s plans.

Werder to use Schmidt as backup

Werder would only use Schmidt as a replacement after bringing him on a season-long loan from Leeds, according to Bild.

The news outlet reports in its print edition (29 July, page 10) that the Swiss defender will be used as a backup, as he had limited playing time at Elland Road last season.

In the previous campaign, the right-back played just 71 minutes in the Championship, with Jayden Bogle the first choice.

Daniel Farke will have to look for Schmidt’s replacement, putting more strain on an already burdened recruitment department, which has faced several disappointments from the likes of Habib Diarra and Igor Paixao this summer.

The whole point of the 25-year-old’s move to Werder is for him to get regular game time, and if that doesn’t happen, then it makes no sense to sanction his transfer.

With Premier League football on the horizon in LS11, the German manager arguably needs quality depth in his squad.

Bogle can’t play every game for Leeds after Premier League promotion

Bogle thrived at Elland Road last season, but there is potentially a greater risk that the Englishman picks up an injury in the coming months due to the rigours of the Premier League.

Farke hasn’t given Schmidt many opportunities at Leeds, but that may change in the top flight.

While it isn’t surprising to see the Switzerland international wanting to leave, going to Werder doesn’t look like the best option.

It feels like a matter of time before the 25-year-old’s exit is announced, but the Elland Road faithful will undoubtedly be baffled if he goes to become a backup elsewhere.
