Archie Gray Tottenham experiment showcases Leeds United mistake

Archie Gray was utilised as a centre-back in Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with Rangers with his summer exit from Leeds United now looking like a mistake.

Gray departed from Elland Road in the summer in favour of a big career move to Tottenham but has started just one Premier League encounter.

The 18-year-old has already been tipped for a January loan move away from Spurs and the feeling is that he made a huge error in judgement by signing for the London-based club.

His recent experiment should serve as a warning to players with an eye on a big move away from Leeds in January.

Leeds United exit may have been a mistake for Archie Gray

First and foremost, why is Gray playing as a centre-back for Tottenham? It is ludicrous.

The very reason Gray earned such plaudits in the Championship was for his technical ability on the ball and to see him playing in such an unfamiliar role is not only disappointing but is also a warning to other players looking to make that big step in their career.

Several clubs were interested in signing Gray but picking Tottenham looks to have been the biggest mistake that he made.

Gray is a midfielder. A very, very good one at that and a move to a lower-placed Premier League side would have suited his development far more with more game time and the chance to play in a position that accurately depicts the attributes he has.

However, when a side like Tottenham come calling, young players especially can have their heads turned at the prospect of being contracted to such a big club in terms of stature.

Although Leeds failed to get promoted, an extra year with the Whites may have been the best decision for Gray in hindsight with his development in mind.

In other Leeds United news, Carlton Palmer believes one player is unlikely to join the Whites in January.
