49ers may have cost Leeds United millions with loan decisions as Max Wober close to exit

Leeds United’s transfer business this summer has been dominated by exits of the temporary variety, and the 49ers have been ticking them off happily.

Diego Llorente and Rasmus Kristensen have joined Roma, Brenden Aaronson moved to Union Berlin, Robin Koch headed off to Eintracht Frankfurt and Marc Roca joined Real Betis until the end of the season.

All of that was before news that Austrian defender Max Wober was set to leave the club to join Borussia Mönchengladbach shortly, having told the club he wanted to leave ahead of the new season.

Once that deal goes through as expected, it will mean that Leeds have just one more spot available to loan players out according to FIFA rules.

That could be seen as a positive, with so many first-team players linked with a move away this summer but still part of the squad at Elland Road.

However realistically it could become more of a problem as it becomes apparent which members of the squad are not part of the plans that Daniel Farke has pulled together for the campaign in the Championship.

The likes of Helder Costa, Ian Poveda and Sam Greenwood are seemingly not in the manager’s plans for the season, yet all are still at the club despite that.

With limited loan exits now available, the club will have to hold out for permanent transfers away from the club this summer and with limited interested parties it’s very possible that those deals never materialise.

That could cost the club millions of pounds in potential transfer fees, and also in wages that will need to be paid if they stick around at Elland Road.

It also means that by not shipping them out early and on loan, the door is still open for more players like Wober to decide they want out late in the day and sort a loan move out when they would have initially been in the club’s plans to play in the Championship.

It’s a difficult situation that they have inherited from Andrea Radrizzani and Victor Orta, but they have been the ones to sanction off the vast majority of these deals and they could now come back to bite us.
