Liverpool attacker Xherdan Shaqiri has congratulated Leeds United ace Ezgjan Alioski after North Macedonia qualified for the European Championships on Thursday.
Goran Pandev’s second-half goal was enough to score a 1-0 win over George in the Euro 2021 play-offs, meaning North Macedonia qualified for their first major international tournament since breaking away from Yugoslavia in 1992.
Alioski, 28, has played a key role in his country’s qualification for the tournament by playing in all but two of their group stage matches, their semi-final victory over Kosovo and play-off final win away in Georgia.
Switzerland international Shaqiri, who was born in Kosovo, has congratulated Alioski on Instagram by saying “well done” to the Leeds flyer.
Alioski replied by saying thank you while Tyler Roberts and Rodrigo were also among the players responding to the 28-year-old’s post.
We’re so happy that Alioski will be playing in the European Championships next summer after an arduous qualifying campaign with North Macedonia.
Alioski’s nation became the first to reach the tournament via the play-offs which came about using UEFA’s Nations League route.
North Macedonia finished third in their Euro 2020 qualifying group, which meant they missed out on automatically reaching the tournament.
But as they were the second-best team in League D of the Nations League, they entered into the play-offs.
It’s confusing – we know – but whichever way you look at it, Alioski has a chance to strut his stuff on a massive stage next summer when North Macedonia play against the Netherlands, Ukraine and Austria.
In other Leeds United news, this player dazzles for Leeds but failed to shine as bright in an international victory this week.
