'Wow, wow, wow' – Hasselbaink shocked by one thing from Leeds clash v Chelsea

Former Leeds United and Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was shocked to learn that Frank Lampard’s side outran the Whites on Saturday night.

They became the first Premier League side to outrun Leeds but had to run 11km more than their average to achieve it.

Chelsea beat Leeds 3-1 at Stamford Bridge, despite going a goal behind in the early minutes of the game.

In what was an end-to-end and high-tempo affair, Chelsea matched Leeds’ energy levels and got the better of the visitors during the second half.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Hasselbaink was visibly surprised after being told that Chelsea outran Leeds by 6km: “Wow, wow, wow. Well, that’s what you need to do to beat them. You need to physically match them and go over them.

“But that for me, I am surprised. I am really surprised. I didn’t think that a team in the Premier League would be able to do that. I have been following them for a long time in the Championship and I know that they cover the pitch very, very well. A lot.”

Runners outrun

Under Marcelo Bielsa, Leeds have become famous for their high-energy and high-risk style of play, deploying a very demanding man-to-man marking system.

Previously dubbed as ‘phenomenal’ by Sky Sports, Leeds’ pressing game is incredibly strong, so to not only match it but to comfortably beat it is an impressive feat by Frank Lampard’s side.

By disrupting Leeds’ press, Chelsea managed to limit the amount of possession Leeds had throughout the game. According to Wyscout, Leeds held 55% of the ball against Chelsea and while that is still impressive, it’s a significant decrease from their seasonal average of over 60%.

As per Wyscout, Chelsea’s equally impressive pressing allowed them to keep Leeds at bay in the final third. The Whites only managed to attempt seven shots, having previously recorded 20 and 22 against Everton and Arsenal respectively.

For the rest of the Premier League, the performance from Chelsea sets a precedent and shows the levels that clubs will have to reach if they want to compete against the Whites.
