‘Wow’, ‘Disgrace’ – Many Leeds fans react as BBC journalist shares key player update
Leeds United fans are ruing their luck after Liam Cooper was hit with an injury while on international duty with Scotland last week.
Scotland manager Steve Clarke confirmed that Cooper, 29, would miss the rest of his country’s international fixtures due to injury.
On Thursday, the Leeds captain played 120 minutes of a goalless draw with Israel as Scotland reached the last round of the Euro 2021 play-offs via a penalty shoot-out victory.
While Clarke didn’t detail the nature of Cooper’s injury, BBC Radio Leeds journalist Adam Pope has since shared via his personal Twitter account that the defender has a “muscle issue”.
Cooper’s injury couldn’t really come at a worse time either as earlier on Sunday, Spain confirmed that Diego Llorente also suffered a muscle injury.
Some Leeds fans are furious that despite the unprecedented nature of the start of this season that so many international matches are still being played.
This is already the second international break of the season and only four Premier League fixtures have been played with a number of Carabao Cup matches also packed in between them.
The Nations League has hardly captured the imagination of football fans while some nations, like England and Spain, have been playing pointless friendlies too.
You would think that with all that’s happening in the world right now that they would try to limit the travel of players as much as possible and scrap friendly matches at the very least.
But no, it seems that international football chiefs are still eager to press on like normal.
And that has come to hurt clubs like Leeds, who might be without two centre-backs for the clash against Wolves next Monday.
Understandably, fans are fuming.
Here is a selection of their tweets:
These next two Leeds fans are a lot more hopeful than the others with them suggesting that Cooper’s injury blow, as well as Llorente’s, aren’t too serious.
We hope that they are right so both centre-backs can be fit to play against Wolves but the next Leeds fan has tweeted what would be the absolute nightmare scenario.
What if Robin Koch gets injured too?
