Willy Gnonto update emerges from Leeds United after gutting new injury blow

Leeds United are days away from entering a nervous final stage of the Championship season.

Ahead of a return to league action, the Whites are top of the Championship table, but level on points with Sheffield United, and only two ahead of Burnley.

With that in mind, Daniel Farke will need as many players available as possible with the hope that no one picks up an injury on international duty, although Willy Gnonto may not come out so lucky.

Gnonto injury update delivered

Gnonto has been a big part of Leeds’ success this season, having made 35 Championship appearances.

In those appearances, the 21-year-old has contributed five goals and five assists towards Leeds’ efforts at the top of the table.

Although he has had to settle for substitute appearances at times, a recent drop in form for Brenden Aaronson has led to calls for Gnonto to be reinstated into the side in his place.

However, Farke may not have the opportunity to do so upon a return from the international break.

The 21-year-old was substituted at half-time when in action for Italy under-21s in a friendly against the Netherlands and has now been made unavailable for their next game against Denmark.

Instead, the Yorkshire Evening Post have reported that the winger is returning to West Yorkshire early, where the injury will be assessed and what it means going forward.

Leeds must end the season on a high

Although Farke deserves plenty of credit for the job he’s done so far, if Leeds don’t get promoted this season, many will see that as a failure.

With the Whites having a better goal difference, they remain in pole position in the Championship table, but the pressure is on now as any dropped points could change the entire race for promotion.

The race for promotion is tight.

With that in mind, an injury picked up in a friendly game is certainly not what Farke needed coming back to league action, but with the extent not yet known, the boss will be keeping his fingers crossed.

Swansea are up next for Leeds before a trip to Luton, with the West Yorkshire outfit ready to pick up some points and get back into the rhythm of things with only eight games remaining.
