Willy Gnonto spotted laughing at Luke O’Nien antics in unseen Leeds vs Sunderland moment

Willy Gnonto was seen laughing at Sunderland’s antics during Leeds United’s 1-0 defeat.

The Whites’ Premier League survival hopes took a blow on Tuesday after their setback at Elland Road, which leaves them just six points above the relegation zone.

Despite dominating possession and testing the visitors’ debutant goalkeeper, Daniel Farke‘s side fell behind to Habib Diarra’s late penalty and couldn’t find a way back.

The stop-start nature of the game culminated in a night of frustration for the Yorkshire outfit, with Gnonto seemingly in disbelief at Sunderland’s time-wasting tactics.

Why did Willy Gnonto laugh at Luke O’Nien?

Unsurprisingly, the home crowd became increasingly irritated with the gamesmanship after the showdown was broken up by niggly fouls and apparent play-acting.

Referee Stuart Attwell was also accused of giving the Mackems the rub of the green on multiple occasions, and Leeds were certainly aggrieved despite 12 minutes being added on.

On one occasion, Gnonto couldn’t help but react after Luke O’Nien went down.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, in their unseen moments article, O’Nien limped gingerly for a few steps following a foul before then running properly, much to the chagrin of Leeds’ supporters.

Gnonto, introduced as a second-half substitute, was spotted laughing at the display of sportsmanship.

However, there was nothing funny about the result, which dragged Farke’s charges dangerously close to the drop zone.

Just how bad were Sunderland’s dark arts?

The post-match data revealed the extent of Sunderland’s controversial use of the dark arts.

As outlined by LUFCDATA on X, the match was halted by 105 different stoppages. In addition, the visitors’ goalkeeper, Melker Ellborg, spent four minutes taking six goal kicks.

Add into the mix the fact that the Black Cats took eight minutes over their 19 throw-ins, and Leeds’ frustration with the antics becomes even more justifiable.

In comparison, the hosts won 22 throw-ins and took just four-and-a-half minutes with them.

Sunderland will rightly point out that the staggering amount of injury time restored parity and that it was the Whites’ failure to take their chances that ultimately cost them.

Either way, Leeds must bounce back – and quickly.
