Willy Gnonto Leeds United exit takes shape as favourable Serie A tax news emerges

Lazio and Fiorentina are in “pole” position to sign Leeds United winger Willy Gnonto, according to Gazzetta Dello Sport.

The Italian newspaper report on 22 May (pg 31, print edition) that return to Italy is “taking shape” by the day for the 19-year-old winger.

Fiorentina have previously shown interest in the Leeds sensation, and it’s believed their eagerness to strike a deal is still alive. However, Lazio are now also in contention with Maurizio Sarri eager to land new wide men, with Pedro now in the latter stages of his career.

Furthermore, if Gnonto did return to Italy, he would be eligible for significant tax reduction due to the Growth Decree agreement.

Inevitable

Gnonto will almost certainly depart Elland Road if the club is relegated to the Championship. The diminutive Italian has done more than enough to earn a move elsewhere, even if his performances have dropped off in recent weeks. The managerial situation hasn’t helped the youngster.

His form at the start of the 2022/23 season was electric and many were tipping the 19-year-old to move to one of Europe’s biggest clubs. Realistically, he should be moving to another Premier League club higher up the food chain. Moving back to Italy would be a backwards step, particularly if it’s not to one of the elite clubs.

Leeds United

Inter Milan, AC Milan, Juventus or Napoli would, obviously, be a step up. The likes of Lazio would not. If Leeds are relegated, they will be inundated with interest.

The winger could potentially have a clause in his contract which would allow him to be sold for a set price. There’s still hope, but Sunday’s clash against Tottenham could be the last time we see Gnonto at Elland Road.
