Wilfried Gnonto shares Leeds United exit admission when asked transfer question by Italian media

Willy Gnonto has admitted it would be a “great honour” to play for Inter Milan after the Leeds United forward came through the ranks at the San Siro.

The 19-year-old completed his move to Elland Road on deadline day in the summer and has been a big hit since arriving in West Yorkshire.

However, the young Italian has hinted at a return to the Serie A giants after suggesting he owes “a lot” to them for his development.

“I owe a lot to Inter, they were eight fundamental years for my growth that led me to be the footballer and man I am now,” said Gnonto in an interview with Gazzetta Dello Sport (22 Jan, pages 26 & 27).

“Playing for or against Inter would always be a great honour. The sports project has always been my prerogative and any choice relating to my career is always made on the basis of that.”

Harsh reality

Unfortunately for Leeds, Gnotno will be attracted attention from elsewhere. His electric start to life in the Premier League will see some of Europe’s biggest clubs take a look at the diminutive 19-year-old.

The sad reality is that if the Whites fail to turn themselves into one of the bigger hitters in the Premier League, they will be forced to sell Gnonto at some point in the future. He’s a player who can make anything happen at any moment and considering his age, he could well go to the very top of the game.

For now, the Elland Road faithful should enjoy the young Italian whilst they can. He will undoubtedly be at the Yorkshire side for a number of years to come and should be looked at as a player who can be a huge part of future successes.

The board certainly deserve a lot of credit when it comes to unearthing Gnonto – and he could well go on to be one of the club’s biggest assets in the coming years.
