Wilfried Gnonto likened to Raheem Sterling as Leeds United ace prepares for England showdown
Leeds United fans could get a good glimpse of Wilfried Gnonto on Friday night when England play against Italy in the Nations League.
According to the Daily Mail, the 18-year-old forward, who joined Leeds from FC Zurich for £3.8million on deadline day, could play a role for the Italians at the San Siro.
It is understood that Gnonto has been likened to Raheem Sterling and journalist Matt Barlow says he’s “a diminutive player of 5ft 5in with supreme balance and electric speed”.
Italy versus England kicks off at 07:45pm on Channel 4.
Leeds fans will know a lot about Gnonto by now.
He’s the player who Victor Orta turned to on deadline day after missing out on Cody Gakpo and Bamba Dieng.
He’s also a player that Jesse Marsch said he didn’t think was quite ready for the Premier League, perhaps due to his tender age, a couple of weeks before that £3.8million deal was rubber-stamped.
Gnonto is Italy’s youngest-ever goalscorer.
The young forward has been capped four times by Italy already and opened his account for his country with a goal against Germany in the Nations League back in June.
If he’s good enough to play for Italy against Germany and England, he might be good enough for the Premier League, Jesse.
Gnonto is versatile and can play on the wings as well as up front while last season at FC Zurich, he played a key role in them winning the Swiss Super League title by scoring eight goals and supplying three assists in 33 league appearances.
We’re excited by him.
It wasn’t quite the signing he hoped for when Orta jetted out to Eindhoven to try and land Gakpo but still, it’s one we’re looking forward to.
In other Leeds United news, Leeds’ chances of securing this free transfer signing are increasing.
