Wilfried Gnonto January transfer twist emerges at Leeds United after Elland Road contract development

Leeds United have no intention of selling Wilfried Gnonto during the January transfer window despite recent rumours, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The outlet reported on its website on Monday (22 January) that the Whites hope to come to an agreement over an improved contract for the Italian international sooner rather than later and therefore will not sanction his sale this month.

Despite reports linking with West Ham United [SportsLens, 9 January], it appears likely that Gnonto will pen a new contract at Elland Road, with an agreement drawing near over an improved package for the 20-year-old as he looks set to play a crucial role in the Whites’ promotion push.

Going nowhere

Most supporters expected Gnonto to take to the Championship like a duck to water and tear England’s second tier apart, but for whatever reason the Italian winger has struggled to really make an impact in the first half of the season.

In 21 appearances, the 20-year-old has only managed to score and assist once as he has played a bit part role, with Crysencio Summerville and Dan James typically preferred on either flank.

Hopefully, the security and financial boost of a new contract will help Gnonto rediscover that form that made him such a force to be reckoned with in the Premier League, especially now that talk surrounding his future at Elland Road can finally be put to bed.

Gnonto will face a battle to win back his place in Daniel Farke’s starting XI however, as both Summerville and James’ recent form has made them almost undroppable. Even if he has to work his way off the bench, the 20-year-old has a major role to play between now and the end of the season.
