'What we're learning' – Alex Crook claims Leeds plotting major midfielder move in January

talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook has claimed that Leeds United will make a move for Norwich midfielder Todd Cantwell, but not until the January window.

Leeds have been linked with a move for Cantwell all summer, with PA news agency, via Yahoo Sports, reporting that the two clubs were in talks over a deal.

The Daily Star reported that a move for the £20m-rated man could happen by Friday – the deadline for domestic transfers from EFL clubs.

However, Crook claims that Victor Orta is going to wait until January to make his move.

Talking on the White & Sawyer Show (talkSPORT, Monday 11.30am), Crook was asked if there was any Leeds transfer news.

“There is a bit,” said Crook. “We know they’ve shown interest In Todd Cantwell. Victor Orta has come out and admitted he’s high on the shortlist, but now he’s said they won’t make their move until the winter transfer window.

“That’s not long away. There’s only around 10 weeks until the next window opens up.

“What we’re learning is that Premier League clubs are already planning for the next window.”

Leeds happy to wait

Some Leeds fans are still hoping for another signing by the Friday domestic deadline, but we think it’s unlikely.

if the right player was free at the right price then we’re sure Leeds would pounce.

However, £20m for Cantwell seems a lot of money and Leeds might be hoping that Norwich drop their price if no one comes in for the player in the summer window.

A midfielder is the missing piece of the jigsaw but Leeds aren’t desperate and have shown they’re willing to snub a deal if it’s too expensive.

Talking in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Orta admitted that Leeds had looked at Udinese midfielder Rodrigo De Paul but couldn’t meet the valuation put on his head by the Serie A club.

“[De Paul] was one player we analysed but, in the end, the valuation of his club was at a level that was difficult for Leeds to reach, as a newly promoted club.”

£20m for a Championship player who fell away in the Premier League last season with a club that got relegated doesn’t scream value to us either and we’re happy to wait out Norwich and try and sign him for a better price.

Cantwell is under contract until 2022 and would be entering the final year of his contract next summer. That could push Norwich towards softening their stance.
