'What is he thinking?' - Noel Whelan blasts Leeds player who showed his 'weakness' v Cardiff

Noel Whelan has blasted Leeds United goalkeeper Kiko Casilla for his role in Saturday’s 3-3 draw against Cardiff City at Elland Road.

Leeds were three goals ahead and cruising towards a big victory with half an hour to go before Casilla’s inability to deal with a cross led to Lee Tomlin kickstarting the Bluebirds’ comeback.

Ex-Leeds star Whelan was furious with what he saw from Casilla and claims that the Spanish goalkeeper had to do a lot better in that situation.

“I don’t know what he’s thinking,” said Whelan on BBC Radio Leeds [6m01s] after the match on Saturday.

“If you’re going to come and punch, you’ve got to punch the whole lot and you’ve got to get distance and you’ve got to put it out of play. You’ve got to send it 30 yards up the field.

“This was a flap. It was a poor punch, soft punch. Great finish, don’t get me wrong, but what were you doing? What is he thinking?

“It’s showing a weakness there.”

It is not the first time that Casilla has made a mistake that has led to a goal and as long as he is playing in between the sticks for the Whites, it will not be his last mistake either.

Casilla has had worse games than his outing against Cardiff and the former Real Madrid goalkeeper should have dealt with that one goal a lot better than he did.

It sparked a revival for Cardiff and had he dealt with the cross better, Leeds might be top of the Championship standings by now.

Casilla will know this.

He’s an experienced player and he will know what his poor punch led to and how it affected the match.

What matters now is how the Spaniard can respond and how he performs against Fulham next weekend.
