We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has urged Leeds to sign an older, experienced goalkeeper as they prepare to take on the Premier League.
The new Leeds number one is 20-year-old Illan Meslier, who grasped his chance with both hands when Kiko Casilla was banned for racist abuse last season.
Casilla is still with Leeds but will be the number two as things stand.
However, behind them is the inexperienced 19-year-old Elia Caprile, and Robinson doesn’t think that’s enough cover for the top-flight campaign.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “Illan Meslier has done very well when he’s come in. Kiko Casilla has the experience, though. He’s been the number one for Leeds for the majority of the time under Marcelo Bielsa.
“I think you need three strong goalkeepers in the Premier League. Tottenham have just taken in Joe Hart – look at the three keepers they’ve got. Premier League sides tend to have three strong keepers.
“I’d like to see Leeds strengthen in that area. Meslier has done really well so far, but what happens if he gets injured?
“I’d like to see them sign an experienced, older goalkeeper who can come in and play in the Premier League if needed. Someone like Pepe Reina.”
Meslier has done brilliantly so far but the Premier League is a big step up for him.
Kiko Casilla started in the only pre-season friendly that Leeds have played so far and he made a trademark error, flapping at a high cross to gift Stoke a goal in their 3-0 win.
Leeds have been linked with other keepers this summer but YEP journalist Graham Smyth has said, “The only way I see a keeper coming in is if Casilla goes.” [All Stats Aren’t We podcast].
Pepe Reina signed for Lazio on a free this summer after spending the second half of last season at Aston Villa.
