Weston McKennie set for Leeds United move amid reports of late hijack possibility

Weston McKennie is one hundred per cent due to sign for Leeds United despite reports of clubs looking to mount a late hijack attempt, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Italian journalist has been providing updates on the negotiations between the Whites and Juventus as the days ticked down towards the close of the transfer window, reporting that personal terms had been agreed as far back as Wednesday (25 January).

He has now reported that agreement was reached over night on Friday and the USMNT midfielder is due to head to England for a medical and a contract signing.

But with Arsenal also linked to the 24-year-old [Corriere dello Sport] , CBS journalist Ben Jacobs had reported earlier on Friday that the club feared a late hijack attempt and were trying to press the deal forward

Doubts had increased when David Ornstein reported in The Athletic on Saturday (28 January) that Nottingham Forest were “among the clubs considering a late attempt to snatch Weston McKennie away from Leeds United”.

However, Romano has now seemingly confirmed that there is no prospect of late drama here, as he responded to reference to both his and Ornstein’s reports on Twitter, writing: “Leeds 100%”.

It’s as close to a reassurance as you can get short of something official from the club, but Arnaut Danjuma has proven that it is never over until it is signed and registered.

The Villarreal winger was set for a loan at Everton, before their loss at West Ham last week (21 January) saw Frank Lampard sacked and Tottenham swoop in to steal him despite photos and medical already being done at Goodison Park.

Given the Whites won fairly comfortably 3-1 at Accrington Stanley earlier on Saturday to advance to the fifth round of the FA Cup, it seems pretty unlikely that Jesse Marsch is going to be sent packing to spark a similar situation.

So there should be no late encouragement to competing clubs for McKennie, who is in line to link up with Tyler Adams in a move that makes a lot of sense on paper.

The next 24-hours will go by at a glacial pace for some Leeds United fans, but Romano seems pretty confident in this one, and given the player has been on board for a few days it surely is just a matter of time.

It has turned into a very strong window at Elland Road, and to get this one over the line might even raise the prospect of pushing into the top half of the table with the new arrivals.

In other Leeds United news, transfer market confusion reigned as a Premier League rival looked to beat the Whites to a surprise late-window move.
