Weston McKennie deal at Leeds United now ‘highly endangered’
Weston McKennie moving to Leeds United permanently is now at “great risk” due to the Whites’ league position, according to Tuttojuve24.
The 24-year-old completed his loan move to Elland Road at the end of the January window, with the Yorkshire side holding the option to make his move permanent in the summer.
However, the American’s permanent move will be in jeopardy if he doesn’t make ten appearances or Leeds are relegated to the second tier.
“The purchase of the player, however, would be at great risk due to the position in the standings of the English club,” wrote TuttoJuve42 (21 February).
“One of the conditions for the purchase of the former Schalke 04 player is that he makes ten appearances in the second part of the season: at the moment, therefore, the permanence of Weston McKennie is highly endangered.”
Future concern
McKennie’s future at Elland Road is currently not a concern for the Elland Road hierarchy. Javi Gracia will utilise the American international as he sees fit and if that means he plays every single game then so be it. He’s yet to really get going since arriving at the club but could still go on to be a real asset in the coming weeks and months.
A partnership of McKennie and Tyler Adams could be pivotal if they can reproduce some of their international form on the international stage. A number of Leeds’ players need to up their performance levels. Jesse Marsch was clearly an issue, but he can only shoulder so much of the club’s downfall.
Leeds have made some big-money signings and many of them have failed to show their worth since arriving at the club. The board will be hoping a fresh approach from Gracia will see some of the players improve in the short term, with this weekend’s fixture against Southampton simply a must-win.
