West Ham star big injury doubt v Leeds as Moyes shares update via Zoom

David Moyes has confirmed Michail Antonio is a major doubt for West Ham when they take on Leeds United at Elland Road on Friday night.

Antonio, 30, has been a key player for the Hammers this season by scoring three goals in seven Premier League appearances but he’s also been in and out of the team lately due to injury.

He missed three matches in a row in October and November before missing West Ham’s defeat to Manchester United last weekend.

Speaking to the media via Zoom on Thursday, Moyes has now confirmed the forward is unlikely to play against Leeds this week.

London Evening Standard journalist Jack Rosser quoted Moyes as saying Antonio is “more than likely doubtful”.

West Ham blow is Leeds boost

Antonio may have had his issues with injuries but the West Ham forward has been crucial to what has been an impressive start to the season at the London Stadium.

According to stats by WyScout, Antonio ranks sixth in the Premier League for the number of fouls won per game [2.95] so he’s someone who the Leeds defence would have had to be very careful when dealing with if he played.

His absence also means that Sebastien Haller is likely to start up front and the Frenchman has hardly been a massive threat up front for the Hammers since his move to London last year from Frankfurt.

Haller has scored just nine goals in 42 Premier League appearances with two of them coming this season.

He’s a big striker who can win a lot of aerial balls. Stats by WyScout show that Haller ranks second in the Premier League for aerial duels per 90 minutes [14.06].

However Leeds do have players like Liam Cooper who can deal with that kind of threat. Only five players have been in more aerial duels inside their own penalty area than the Scotland international [14] this term.
