Welsh media tear into Dan James after the Leeds United loanee's display v Iran

The Welsh media have been quick to ridicule Dan James after the Leeds United loanee was involved in Wales’ damaging Group B defeat to Iran at the World Cup.

Two late goals from Carlos Queiroz’s side were enough for Iran to bounce back from their awful 6-2 defeat to England and leave Rob Page’s side teetering on the edge of elimination.

Wales Online (25 November) were quick to hit out at the performance and didn’t hold back in their assessment of James’ second-half cameo.

They wrote after a 4/10 rating: “[James] Definitely gave Wales an outlet further up the pitch when he came on.

“But, as is often the case, that end product was just lacking.”

Poor performance

That was a desperately poor performance from Wales, who are now almost certain to crash out of the World Cup at the first hurdle. James cannot be to blame for their poor display, with Page relying too heavily on the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale to get his team out of trouble.

Realistically both players are well past their best and it’s now time for Wales to explore new options when it comes to going forward after this World Cup. Hopefully, that will see James be given more opportunities for the national side, which could help the winger get his career back on track.

He hasn’t pulled up many trees for Fulham so far in the 2022/23 season with just one goal to his name and it remains to be seen how much of a future the winger has at Elland Road. Ultimately, James’ lack of end product has been damaging wherever he has gone in his career.

In other Leeds United news, we can exclusively reveal that a takeover by the 49ers could be done within weeks.
