Welsh media react to what Leeds United star Ethan Ampadu did in win v Montenegro
Ethan Ampadu was not at his usual best as the Leeds United midfielder helped Wales to a 2-1 victory over Montenegro on Monday (9 September).
Craig Bellamy’s side got off to the best start, with Kieffer Moore and Harry Wilson both hitting the back of the net after three minutes, though a late goal from Driton Camaj made the final few minutes rather uncomfortable.
Despite the two early goals, Ampadu picked up a yellow card in between, being cautioned for an early shirt pull, but still managed to play all 90 minutes in another Nations League group stage match.
Rating the player 6/10, Wales Online [9 September] wrote: “Made some decent contributions defensively, but just wasn’t as influential as normal.”
Y Clwb Pel Droed [9 September] agreed with the 6/10, writing: “Ampadu gave away possession in difficult conditions and struggled at times with Jovetic dropping into midfield. He worked hard defensively when Wales were under pressure and helped the side get over the line.”
Leeds United star Ethan Ampadu helps Wales to victory
Despite the quick start from Wales, the conditions in Montenegro were absolutely dreadful, taking much of the skill and technique out of the game.
Given this, it seems unfair to criticise one of the midfielders, who was unable to get his foot on the ball as much as usual because of a much more direct performance from Bellamy’s side.
Ampadu was also paired up with Ollie Cooper in the middle of the park, a Swansea City man who has just three international caps to his name, making his job that little bit harder.

Daniel Farke will just be pleased to see his star midfielder return to Elland Road unharmed. Connor Roberts was replaced just before the half-time whistle, with injuries always inevitable in torrential rain.
While it was a mixed performance from the 23-year-old, it was another cap for his national team, which can only be a good experience to bring back to Elland Road with him.
