‘Weird’, ‘Ridiculous’ – These Leeds fans react as Phil Hay makes Augustin claim on Twitter

Leeds United made it five wins in a row on Saturday to move back to the top of the Championship.

They’ve done that largely without new striker signing Jean-Kevin Augustin, who has missed the last three games through injury and has only played 15 minutes total in the latest winning run.

With Augustin out, Tyler Roberts has taken his chance to impress and scored two goals off the bench in the game against Hull.

He came on for an 11-minute cameo in the 2-0 win against Huddersfield on Saturday.

That’s led Athletic journalist Phil Hay to claim, “It feels at this point like Roberts could be more crucial in the run-in as back-up for Bamford than Jean-Kevin Augustin. Always seems to tick the right boxes for Bielsa.”

Augustin was the marquee signing for Leeds in January and there was a lot of excitement when he was announced.

However, he came in looking for fitness and it appears that he’s become a victim of Marcelo Bielsa’s training regime, picking up a hamstring injury that could effectively rule him out of the run-in.

Augustin was the go-to option for Bielsa from the bench for a number of weeks but he never convinced with his fitness and when he returns from injury he’s going to have to start all over again.

In our opinion it’s highly likely that he doesn’t start a game this season and it’s feasible that he doesn’t feature again.

Plenty of Leeds fans have been left bemused by this and are heavily questioning his signing in January.

However, others are thinking more long-term and believe that Augustin will be the club’s number one striker in the Premier League next season – Leeds have an obligation to buy him for €21m if they get promoted.

Here are the best reactions from Leeds fans to Hay’s Twitter claim…

It’s fair to say that neither of Leeds’ January signings – Ian Poveda and Augustin – have done anything yet.

Obviously, the main thing is that Leeds get promoted this season. If we do then what happened in the January window is irrelevant. And so far, so good.

Both players are obviously part of a long-term plan. Poveda is a permanent signing and with Leeds homing in on promotion, Big Kev could be set to join too.

These fans are happy about that and see him leading the line next season.
