‘Weird’ – Patrick Bamford shares what is probably ‘going to happen’ with rest of Leeds season
Patrick Bamford seems pretty sure that Leeds United will have to play their remaining nine fixtures behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic.
It has been around a month and a half since Leeds played their last match against Huddersfield and while the nation sits and waits in a state of lockdown, there have been a lot of talks going on about how to resume the currently-suspended season.
Leeds are top of the Championship and on course for promotion to the Premier League so any thought of voiding the entire campaign is completely off the table for anyone connected with the Yorkshire giants.
Bamford believes that the most likely way that games will be completed is for them to take place without any fans being able to attend.
“I think so,” said Bamford, as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post, when asked if it’s likely that games will be played in empty stadiums.
“In terms of safety and the general health of the population then I think probably playing behind closed doors is what is going to happen.
“It’s going to be weird, it’s probably not ideal for fans and it would probably be quite strange to get promoted if we did it in front of an empty stadium so that would be weird.
“But in the long term, we would still be getting promoted and we are also keeping the population safe.
“There are going to be discussions about that I am sure but I am sure they will make the right decisions.”
Bamford’s claim about playing matches behind closed doors is perhaps the most likely outcome here.
However it could be a long time before even that happens due to the threat that the coronavirus poses.
We still have over two weeks left until lockdown measures are lifted but there are still hundreds upon hundreds of deaths each day due to COVID-19.
The government will not risk a second wave of the virus by letting people gather in big crowds too soon.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites may be tempted to pursue a deal for this Serie A centre-back.
