Wayne Rooney sends ‘failure’ message to Leeds United in admission after Plymouth loss

Wayne Rooney has suggested it would be a failure for Leeds United if they aren’t promoted after beating his Plymouth Argyle side.

The Whites came away from Elland Road with three points against the Pilgrims on Saturday 2 November thanks to goals from Dan James, Joel Piroe and Brendan Aaronson.

Daniel Farke’s side were worthy winners, dominating large spells of the game, which saw Rooney suggest, transcribed by the Mail on Sunday (3 November, page 86), that promotion is a must this season.

He said: “They’re a very good team and anything but promotion for Leeds this season would be a failure.”

Wayne Rooney shares Leeds United message after Plymouth Argyle loss

It has to be said that the Whites blew away the ex-Manchester United star’s side throughout the clash on Saturday (2 November) with all their quality on show.

The first half showing was superb which started with a top-class effort from range from James while Piroe and Aaronson scored poacher-like goals.

This allowed Farke’s to be less effective in the second half as they already had the lead and never looked like losing it as Plymouth failed to have a single shot.

Now Rooney has spoken out on Leeds’ promotion credentials which won’t surprise anyone despite a turbulent summer and start to the campaign.

The win at Elland Road has seen the Whites move to second in the Championship and supporters will be hopeful that they can maintain their place in the automatic places.

After disappointment in the play offs last year, there is hope that the Argyle boss is right and promotion will be the reward at the end of the season.
