Wayne Rooney includes Kalvin Phillips in his England XI vs Germany
Leeds United ace Kalvin Phillips has been picked by Wayne Rooney in his preferred England XI against Germany.
The Three Lions topped their Euro 2020 group which meant that they find themselves facing Germany in the Round of 16.
Rooney has included the Leeds midfielder in his eleven but has also gone with Declan Rice and Jordan Henderson – taking away the creativity from the side with the omissions of Jack Grealish, Mason Mount and Phil Foden.
Per talkSPORT, he wrote, “I would go with a midfield three, rather than a two, plus a No 10, which was Grealish’s role against the Czechs.
“It’s important not to be outnumbered in the middle because Joachim Löw has forward players who drop back in, like Thomas Müller and Kai Havertz, and Joshua Kimmich, who comes in from right wing-back to centre midfield.
“Provided Jordan Henderson is fit I’d start him alongside Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips but Henderson has to be 100 per cent.
A lot has been made of England’s style of play and them not being easy on the eye, to which a number of pundits have asked Gareth Southgate to inject some creativity in the side.
Rooney’s solution is to put another deep-lying player in there which is baffling.
However, he is right about including Phillips. The Leeds midfielder has played as a six as well as an eight at the EUROs, and due to his seamless understanding with Rice, players in front of them have been given the creative licence to roam.
Phillips was all over the pitch for England’s opener against and also provided an assist for the game’s only goal. He’s been so much more than a metronome for Southgate in this competition and we’re delighted to see him get the recognition he deserves.
However, starting Henderson is an absolutely ridiculous thing to do, and we’re not surprised why Rooney’s managerial career is yet to take off.
England need the likes of Foden and Grealish playing ahead of Rice and Phillips.
