Warnock: Leeds fans will be dancing, top players will want to come
Sky Sports pundit Stephen Warnock has said that “Leeds fans will be dancing in the streets” if Marcelo Bielsa signs a new two-year deal.
He also said that top players would be attracted to the club and want to play for Bielsa as Leeds look to strengthen again this summer.
Talking on The Football Show (Sky Sports, Monday, 11am), Host Rob Wotton said, “Reports in Argentina of a two-year deal, now that would be a thing for a man who is generally laissez-faire with his contract.”
“Leeds fans will be dancing in the streets if Bielsa signs a two-year deal,” Warnock replied.
“They’ll be absolutely beside themselves because for them he’s a god for what he’s done, getting them out of the Championship and into the Premier League.
“We questioned at the start of the season whether Bielsa-Ball would work in the Premier League, it absolutely does because it’s so difficult to play against.
“They need to improve the squad, but with the pull Leeds have and that Bielsa has they will attract top players now.
“The affiliation with the 49ers, global appeal, money being injected in. Them being in the Premier League with the infrastructure they’re putting in, it’s a club players will want to go to and a manager they will want to play for.”
Cherry on top
The good news keeps coming for Leeds United at the moment. What a season it’s been and it would just be topped off if Bielsa committed to two years.
It would still be a surprise despite the reports. Bielsa only likes to deal with one-year contracts but perhaps he’s been persuaded by the Leeds hierarchy.
And, to be fair, if he wanted to leave halfway through a two-year deal, it’s not like Leeds would try and stop him.
What it would do is make a real statement of intent about Leeds and where we’re going.
Warnock is bang on about the fact that top players are more likely to come if Bielsa is committed and that could be another reason for the shift in contract lengths.
Either way, it’s been some return to the Premier League. Almost perfect, in fact. The only thing missing is the fans.
