View: Tyler Roberts may have reached dead-end at Leeds United

Has Tyler Roberts reached a dead-end at Leeds United?

The 23-year-old has had a curious career at Elland Road with Marcelo Bielsa appearing to admire him and believe in his qualities.

There have been times previously when it felt like he could move out on loan, but Bielsa felt he could be a vital cog in his side.

It’s been the case for the past couple of seasons. Bielsa tried him as a striker. Bielsa tried him as an attacking midfielder. And yet, he seldom clicks.

When Roberts produced a good performance in the 2-2 draw against Brentford, it felt like he has turned the corner. And yet with only seven Premier League starts, Bielsa is yet to fully give him the vote of confidence he needs.

The Argentine made a big statement against Everton. He took Raphinha – arguably Leeds’ best player this season at half time – and brought in Roberts.

With Leeds 2-0 down, the stage was perfectly set for Roberts to show his mettle. In the end, it was disappointing.

Roberts managed only 13 touches, per Whoscored. He failed to register a single shot, neither did he manage to come up with creative moves.

Bielsa defended him, as usual, saying [11 February] it’s the system that prevented Roberts from exerting influence.

The Argentine said, as quoted by Leeds Live: “He could not attack because the team could not attack. Difficult for them to feed the forwards. Not Tyler’s problem, it was the construction of the offensive game.”

Leeds actually played better in the second half once Bielsa re-adjusted his system, but Roberts couldn’t just find his feet.

It felt like a dead-end for him at Goodison Park.
