View: Leeds United must make last-ditch attempt to sign Joe Rodon on loan

Leeds United should look to battle Brighton in the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender in January on loan.

According to reports from the Daily Mail, Brighton are interested in signing Rodon should they sell Dan Burn to Newcastle, with Spanish club Levante are also keen.

Last month, The Telegraph reported that Leeds are also looking to sign him on loan, and this is the ideal time to make a smart move.

Leeds are focussing on bolstering the squad in the final few days of the window.

Based on the reports, it seems Marcelo Bielsa is focused on adding depth in attacking midfield with Liverpool’s Takumi Minamino [Sky Sports] being eyed as an option.

However, Leeds should aim to sign a centre-back as well, especially with Liam Cooper out till March.

The Whites do have Robin Koch, Pascal Struijk and Diego Llorente as other options, but adding Rodon would give the Argentine more flexible options.

He can use the likes of Koch and Struijk in defensive midfield role, a position they have played before, especially in the absence of Kalvin Phillips.

The 24-year-old joined Spurs for a fee of £10.9 million in October 2020. The Wales defender is highly-rated but he has struggled to nail down a regular starting place at Spurs.

Last season, Rodon managed 14 appearances in all competitions. This season, he has managed just one Premier League appearance so far, clearly showing that he has dropped down the pecking order.

He is very good at reading the game and needs to move away from Spurs to get his confidence back again. Having said that, he is not guaranteed a regular starting berth at Leeds either, but Bielsa will have more options with him around.

A loan move would be a risk-free business, and it suits all parties involved.
