View: David Turnbull could be “possible solution” for Leeds United

Leeds United could be looking to sign a midfielder this month as Marcelo Bielsa seeks to bolster that department.

According to the Athletic transfer analysis, Scottish midfielder David Turnbull could be an option for the Whites.

Kalvin Phillips is expected to be out till March, and Leeds are short of option in midfield.

Turnbull is a different sort of midfielder who would bring something extra to the side.

The Celtic midfielder, who joined from Motherwell, scored nine goals in 2020-21. This season, he has chipped in with another nine goals.

He has been a regular presence for the Bhoys, managing more than 1500 playing minutes.

The 22-year-old is not a like for like replacement for Phillips, rather he is someone who takes up more advanced positions on the side.

In that way, he is a natural creator of chances, with around 4.1 key passes per game according to Whoscored. He takes more shots on goal (3.7) and gets into good scoring areas.

He is still relatively young and can grow into a quality player under the guidance of a world-class manager like Bielsa.

Leeds midfielders generally don’t score enough despite the fact they create loads of opportunities. Turnbull can make a difference here.

However, is he a realistic target in January? He has a contract at the club till 2024 and Celtic could demand a high transfer fee for him.

It remains to be seen if Leeds make any move for him this month, but he would be a smart addition if they do so.

In other Leeds United news, Whites want to sign int’l striker on loan with move already made.
