Victor Orta now explores Andoni Iraola hire at Leeds United after Carlos Corberan development at West Brom

Victor Orta is keen to explore a move for Rayo Vallecano manager Andoni Iraola as the Leeds United chief turns his attention away from Carlos Corberan, according to 90min.

Corberan was believed to be Leeds’ first choice to replace Jesse Marsch at Elland Road, however, the Spaniard has put an end to speculation by signing a new deal at West Brom until 2027 (90min, 7 February).

It’s believed Orta is now exploring other options with Iraola identified as a possible candidate to replace the American. The 40-year-old has previously played under Marcelo Bielsa at Athletic Club and also lined up alongside Jack Harrison for New York City in the MLS.

Speedy appointment

The Corberan news will come as a blow to Leeds, but they must ensure they plough on with their manager search and appoint someone quickly. Obviously, time is of the essence, but appointing the right candidate is vital. Iraola has worked wonders with Rayo Vallecano and would be an interesting move from the board.

He’s never worked in the Premier League and his reputation has been heightened due to the impressive job he is currently doing in Spain. It would be a risk, but it’s a risk the club should potentially take. Premier League survival is of paramount importance but being innovative and progressive when appointing a manager can reap long-term rewards.

The board will be eager to have a new manager in place for the weekend fixture against Manchester United. Whoever does take the role at Elland Road desperately needs time before the Whites face Southampton and Everton in what promises to be two season-defining fixtures.
