'Very confident' - Grant McCann impressed with rarely-seen Leeds ace after 4-0 win v Hull

Hull City boss Grant McCann was very impressed with Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier after he made his Championship debut in the 4-0 victory.

The Lorient loanee made his second start for the Whites and managed to keep his first clean-sheet after impressing in the FA Cup defeat against Arsenal back in January.

There could have been pressure on the shoulders of the French youngster after he only found out he would be starting after Kiko Casilla was banned for eight games on Friday evening.

Granted, Hull didn’t put an enormous amount of pressure on Meslier during the game but McCann didn’t believe that was a reason behind the defeat to their Yorkshire rivals.

“I don’t know if that will help teams or not, I know Meslier’s a very good goalkeeper,” he told the Yorkshire Evening Post when asked about Casilla’s absence.

“There were a couple of times when the ball came into the box and he was very confident, he caught it. He’s a good keeper.

“There were a couple of occasions where we could have been a bit more physical with him but that wasn’t the reason why we lost.”

Leeds fans made their support for Casilla clear on Saturday despite it being the first game of his long ban. Despite that, there were calls for Meslier to be brought in any way before he kept three clean sheets in a row.

Meslier was solid at the KCOM Stadium, and even completed more successful passes than any Hull players on the pitch during the 4-0 drubbing.

There is clear confidence in the Frenchman, and he will play a critical role in the next couple of months with 10 games left to play in the Championship.
