Union Berlin hit out at Brenden Aaronson abuse as Leeds United loanee is sent off

Union Berlin’s social media admin hit out at criticism of Brenden Aaronson as the Leeds United loanee was sent off in the Bundesliga against Darmstadt.

The German side posted on their official Twitter account on Saturday (26 August) that the American international is a “superbly skilled footballer” and “doesn’t deserve any of the [expletive] being thrown at him here” after abusive messages following the 22-year-old’s 21st-minute second yellow for kicking the ball away.

Aaronson was one of the earliest in a long list of Whites players who left the club following relegation on loan thanks to release clauses in their contracts, after making 40 appearances in all competitions for the club last season.

Union Berlin’s in-game update was: “Oh no. Aaronson’s been sent off. Second yellow for kicking the ball away, even if he barely moved it more than a couple of metres. He trudges off disconsolately, he can’t believe it.”

The admin then added: “Brenden Aaronson is a superbly skilled footballer and a young man who doesn’t deserve any of the [expletive] being thrown at him here. Keep it to your own sites, please.”

Unhappy

Nobody is coming out of the situation well after Aaronson’s move to Elland Road, and especially since his subsequent move away again.

A target for Marcelo Bielsa he had proven to be impossible to get a hold of from Red Bull Salzburg two seasons ago, as the Argentine went without any reinforcements in the January window.

By the time Victor Orta eventually captured him last summer Bielsa had long been sacked, but there were high expectations for the attacking midfielder after his almost-£25million move [Sky Sports].

It is a sign of how that turned out that nobody involved is currently at the club, with Orta gone, Aaronson in Germany, and the club now four manager’s down the line from then-boss, and former Salzburg colleague, Jesse Marsch.

There is plenty of bad feeling among the Leeds United fanbase thanks to the chaos and struggles the club have been through in the past year, and particularly this summer.

Players with get-out options being able to abandon ship for top flight moves after being part of the reason the club were relegated has gone down like a lead balloon, with the fact the clauses existed in the first place leaving Daniel Farke to pick up the pieces.

The return of Willy Gnonto and Luis Sinisterra on top of the big-money arrival of Joel Piroe has helped to lift spirits and secure a first Championship win of the season.

But it is no surprise that players who have left are unpopular, although hounding them with abuse does cross a line, but if those who are still at the club can keep up the form shown at Ipswich on Saturday it will show that the grass isn’t necessarily greener elsewhere this season with Aaronson struggling so far in the German capital.
