'Unfair on Leeds' – Carlton Palmer delivers big Coronavirus warning from China & 19/20 solution

Former Leeds United and England star Carlton Palmer has said it would be “unfair on Leeds” if the season was voided now but warned it would be a long time before football would resume in the UK.

Talking on White & Sawyer (talkSPORT, Wednesday, 12.30pm) Palmer – who is now based in Shanghai – said that too many games had been played to just scrap all the results and that the season should be played out.

However, he said based on his experience in China, that he didn’t think that could happen for a long time, possibly as much as five or six months, and that if it was impossible to finish the remaining games, results should stand as they are.

“There are only nine games left in the Championship, the majority of games have been played,” Palmer said.

“As soon as football is able to be played, which will be a way away, I think they need to finish the season in the format set out, and then move to next season. Maybe just play each team once and flip for home or away.

“It’s unfair on Liverpool, it’s unfair on Leeds United. If it was before Christmas I’d agree with voiding it. But now, the current season needs to be finished.

Asked if it was his standing as a former Leeds player that was dictating his stance Palmer said, “Leeds are a massive club and I want to see them promoted to the Premier League. But my stance is because the majority of games have been played, there are eight or nine games to go. If you’re not going to complete it I think it should stand as it is.”

We’d prefer to win promotion but either solution would work for Leeds.

However, we’re concerned by what Palmer has said based on being out in China, where the Coronavirus was discovered in November.

Life is only just starting to get back to normal there now, five months on, and Palmer said that China had put more stringent measures in place than the UK when the outbreak was first discovered.

We hope he’s wrong. We’re not sure we could go another five months with no football and that would certainly have a very dramatic effect on this season and the 20/21 campaign.
