'Uncharted territory' - Phil Hay details one possible option for EFL amid coronavirus concern

The spread of coronavirus has caused a lot of public panic in recent weeks, with people flocking to shops to stock up on toilet rolls, pasta and medicine.

Its impact has also started to seep its way into English football, with the Wednesday night between Arsenal and Manchester City being postponed due to some Arsenal players meeting Olympiakos and Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, whose confirmed he has coronavirus, two weeks ago.

Football in Italy has been suspended while matches in La Liga are set to take place behind closed doors, as well as matches in European competitions this week.

There has not been anything said about what will happen with English football outside of the Premier League but The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has detailed one possible option for the EFL.

“One option would be to declare the final positions as they are but needless to say, that’s wouldn’t be without complications or complaints. Uncharted territory to say the least,” said the former Yorkshire Evening Post journalist via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday morning.

If that was to happen right now then Leeds United would be crowned as Championship title winners and gain promotion to the Premier League.

A lot of Leeds fans would probably bite your arm off if that was offered to them but in the fairness of sport, there are not going to be a lot of teams happy about it.

As Hay says, there will be major complaints from clubs who feel as though they have lost out due to the season ending early.

What about the clubs who are just in the relegation zone right now? What about those just outside the automatic promotion spots and the play-off places?

It’s bound to open up a can of worms but, as Hay is aware of, it’s just one option.

Nothing is ideal but at the moment, the priority has to be public health.

In other Leeds United news, Neil Redfearn has been waxing lyrical about this Elland Road ace.
