'Unbelievable' - Jermaine Beckford hails Leeds ace who left him 'absolutely buzzing' v Man City

Jermaine Beckford has claimed that he was left “absolutely buzzing” by Kalvin Phillips’ performance when Leeds United played Manchester City last weekend.

The Whites came away from a hard-fought and enthralling clash against Pep Guardiola’s men with a well-earned point following a 1-1 draw.

Beckford was especially enamoured with the defensive display put in by the England international – and in particular how he managed to keep a lid on City maestro Kevin de Bruyne.

Speaking on the Doing a Leeds Podcast, he said: “Kalvin Phillips did an unbelievable job on Kevin de Bruyne.

“For me, that was one of the biggest obstacles we had to overcome.

“If Kalvin was half a yard off it, Kevin de Bruyne – we all know what he’s capable of, we all know he can find a pass out of nowhere.

“For Phillips to be able to put him in his pocket, I was absolutely buzzing with that.”

This was a masterful display at times from Phillips, and as per usual, he was a key contributor to Leeds getting anything out of last weekend’s match.

As per Wyscout, he made seven interceptions – 1.63 more than his season average.

All of those interventions came in his own half, and that defensive solidity was a useful tool for the Whites.

On the other side of the coin, De Bruyne managed 13.32 fewer passes than his season average, and his dribble success rate was a full 12.2% lower.

Phillips did a fine job of stifling him at Elland Road, and once again the local lad proved that he is Premier League quality through and through.

In other Leeds United news, Kalvin Phillips has told this former Leeds player that he misses him.
