'Unbelievable' - Hutton blown away by Leeds 28y/o but admits 'he’ll be tested' if they go up
Ex-Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton has been blown away by the performances of Leeds United ace Luke Ayling this season.
Ayling, 28, put in a man of the match-worthy shift on Sunday as Leeds won 5-4 against Birmingham at St Andrew’s.
The former Bristol City right-back scored a wonderful goal and also assisted Stuart Dallas’ strike and forced Wes Harding’s own goal to seal the win for Leeds in stoppage time.
Ayling has received criticism from some corners of Elland Road this season but former Scotland right-back Hutton has been impressed.
“I’ve actually always liked him as a player, great energy. I think the way that Bielsa plays and the demands – the energy, high pressure – I was watching him and he was up and down all day, his stats are unbelievable,” Hutton told Football Insider.
“He plays well there, he gets the license to go forward but he’s also a very good defender. He’s a very good player, obviously, if they come up he’ll be tested, then we’ll find out exactly what he’s capable of.
“As I’ve seen him at the moment I think he’s got all the qualities to be a really good player – well, he is a really good player.”
Of course, all of Leeds’ players are going to be tested if they win promotion to the Premier League.
Marcelo Bielsa does not come across as the type of manager who would make wholesale changes if his side goes up so a lot of the players who are at Elland Road now would probably be used again in the top-flight.
Is Ayling someone who you could see playing well each week in the Premier League? Perhaps not.
However we have seen time and time again over the years when players punch above their weight in the top division of English football so why can’t Ayling be one of those players?
In other Leeds United news, a Sky journalist has poured cold water on Leeds’ link to this £50,000-a-week striker.
