Troy Deeney wowed by Leeds United player he ‘really likes’, it’s not Calvert-Lewin
Troy Deeney loved Ethan Ampadu’s assertive performance during Leeds United’s 4-1 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday evening.
Daniel Farke’s side raced into a 2-0 lead at half-time thanks to another brace goals from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, before the Welshman made it 3-0 in the 60th minute.
Justin Devenny scored a stoppage-time consolation goal, but Anton Stach had the last say when he curled in a free-kick to seal Leeds’ emphatic win over Crystal Palace.
The result means Leeds have moved six points clear of the relegation zone and into 16th place, highlighting the team’s brilliant revival in December.
Ampadu finally scored his first league goal for Leeds, and fans will be delighted with how he’s played under Farke this season.

Ethan Ampadu leading by example for Leeds
Playing at the base of the midfield, Leeds’ captain was imperious once again, and he has adapted seamlessly to Premier League football.
Deeney named Ampadu in his Premier League Team of the Week for BBC Sport, and was impressed with how the midfielder took the game by the scruff of the neck.
He said: “I really, really like this player. I like what he is about. Not only has he grown as a player since he left Chelsea, but he has grown as a human and a real leader.
“Big tackles, big moments, he is always there and got a goal in the victory against Palace.”

Ampadu has been one of Leeds’ most consistent players since joining the club in July 2023, with his impact being revolutionary to Farke’s side.
He wasn’t the only one to be named by Deeney, and it was certain that Calvert-Lewin would be getting a mention.

What Troy Deeney said about Dominic Calvert-Lewin isn’t surprising
Calvert-Lewin is being touted for an England call-up after six goals in his last five games.
The 28-year-old had a slow start to life in LS11, but the change of system to a 3-5-2 has completely reversed his fortunes, and as a result, Leeds are reaping the rewards.
Deeney added: “People are asking if he could make a sneaky run into the England set-up for the summer. I think it would be a big ask considering the amount of injuries he has had over the course of his career.
“Right now, let’s just enjoy him being back, fit, and playing – and when he is fit and playing, he scores goals. That’s all that really matters.”
The Whites are one of the most in-form teams in the top flight, and their players are stepping up at a crucial point in the season.
If they keep this up, fans should have no worries over Premier League relegation in the upcoming months.
