Troy Deeney slams ‘awful’ incident in Leeds United win vs Bristol City

Troy Deeney questioned why the “awful” challenge from George Tanner on Georginio Rutter did not result in a penalty for Leeds United against Bristol City.

Tanner made clear contact on Rutter late in the first half in Friday’s (2 February) Championship clash at Ashton Gate, but a spot-kick was not awarded.

The Sky Sports panel agreed that it should have been a pen for Leeds, although it ultimately mattered little as the Whites claimed a 1-0 win through Wilfried Gnonto’s strike.

“I’d like to see a man of his size take that one touch and score,” Deeney said on Sky Sports Main Event [2 February, 20:56]. “The defender is lucky because that’s awful.”

Host David Prutton added that the challenge was “reckless”, while Jermaine Beckford said it was “a penalty all day long”.

Leeds see off Bristol City

Tanner clearly took out Rutter, yet referee Stephen Martin decided against pointing to the penalty spot.

At that point, Daniel Farke must have quietly been wondering if it could be a turning point of sorts in the game.

Leeds were on top but could not take their chances prior to the half-time interval.

Less than two minutes after the restart, though, Gnonto scored for what proved to be the winner as Leeds won for a fifth league game in a row.

Junior Firpo thought he’d opened the scoring for Leeds United, but Georginio Rutter’s offside call saw the goal ruled out.

If Gnonto had not scored when he did, and Bristol City snatched a goal, Daniel Farke would have been furious with the officials.

The standard of officiating in the Championship this season seems to be worse than ever, but Leeds are not letting that impact them.

Fair play to every player for getting the job done and lifting the Whites into second place, even if only overnight.
