Tottenham defender Cristian Romero sustains injury ahead of Leeds United clash

Leeds United travel to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday in search of their third Premier League win of the campaign, and the hosts could be in trouble.

Antonio Conte is already sweating on the fitness of midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg after the knock he sustained in the goalless draw with Everton prior to the break ruled him out of international action with Denmark.

Spurs could be in more trouble after centre-back Cristian Romero sustained an injury when Argentina took on Brazil during the early hours of Wednesday, and Leeds could be handed an advantage playing against a Tottenham without Hojbjerg and the former Atalanta defender.

The Athletic Spurs correspondent Charlie Eccleshare shared the injury update on his personal Twitter account, and he was pretty worried.

He said: “These international breaks. Romero picks up a thigh injury for Argentina against Brazil. So important for Tottenham that’s not serious. Severity not yet known.”

Fabrizio Romano also weighed in with his opinion while sharing the update on Twitter.

The Sky Sports journalist said: “Bad news for Tottenham and Antonio Conte.

“Cristian ‘Cuti’ Romero goes off injured in Argentina-Brazil clash – and it looks like a left thigh injury.

“Medical tests in the next hours will clarify on his problem.

“Cuti Romero was playing at top level again.”

Romero, 23, has established himself as a starter for Tottenham after an initial adaptation stage upon his arrival in the summer, starting all 12 of the games he has featured in across all competitions since then.

They definitely need such a player available, but it remains to be seen if that will happen.

The suspended Oliver Skipp, Hojbjerg, and Romero could all be missing when Leeds come visiting on Sunday, and that could play into Marcelo Bielsa’s hands.

Patrick Bamford could finally see action after injury expert Ben Dinnery mooted a return from his problems for the trip, and he would relish playing against a Tottenham side without their best defender and best defensive midfield pairing.

Nothing is guaranteed as Conte has a lot of quality players to call upon, but the fact that the aforementioned trio could miss the clash against the Whites is definitely bad news for the Italian.
