talkSPORT pundit Ally McCoist has described Leeds United as a “big, big club” and said he’s confident they will finish in mid-table next season.
Leeds are back in the top-flight for the first time in over 16 years and have been welcomed back with an opening game against champions Liverpool at Anfield.
McCoist admitted that was a “tough opener” but thinks that Leeds will have enough to consolidate over the 20/21 campaign.
Talking on the Breakfast show (talkSPORT, Monday, 7am), McCoist said, “Leeds are a big big club who create talking points. They’ve been out of the Premier League for far too long. I’m ecstatic that they’re back.
“I am ecstatic. And they’ve got a tough opener. If fans were there it would be tremendous, but we’re getting there.
“The Leeds fans haven’t had a lot to shout about over the past years.
“I think it’s magic they’re back in the top flight. To see Bielsa go up against Klopp, Guardiola…. it will be brilliant, won’t it?
“Without getting carried away, I would be very, very hopeful of a mid-table finish.”
Some Leeds fans are getting a bit carried away with the new signings that have been made and are looking at a European finish.
That would be in excess of what Leeds are looking for and a mid-table finish would do Andrea Radrizzani just fine.
Sheffield United and Wolves are providing the model to follow. They finished ninth and seventh respectively last season.
However, with Marcelo Bielsa in charge, you just never know.
The one clue we’ve had came when Leeds played Arsenal in the FA Cup in January. The Gunners might not be the force they once were, but they finished eighth last season and Leeds played them off the park in the first half of the game at the Emirates.
That’s not just our view – the graph below shows the blue of Leeds absolutely dominating in the first 45 before retreating into their shells in the second half.
One thing we’re sure of is that Bielsa’s tactics won’t change. Leeds will play a high-pressing, attacking game and we’re fascinated to see how that works out against Liverpool.
