Tony Mowbray admits Blackburn in talks with Leeds United over Ian Poveda return
Tony Mowbray hopes to get Leeds United winger Ian Poveda back at Blackburn for the rest of the season.
The 22-year-old picked up an ankle injury and needed surgery. He has undergone rehabilitation at Elland Road and has recently returned to light training.
Mowbray has suggested that they are in talks with the Whites to get the winger back for the rest of the season after discussions over cutting the loan spell short failed to materialise.
As per the deal, Blackburn are still paying a part of his wages. Mowbray has hailed him as a “quality” player and hopes he can make a comeback.
“We’re in touch with Leeds about Poveda who is back on the grass doing light stuff with them. He’s not ready to play football yet,” Mowbray said to Lancashire Telegraph.
“I know we are still paying a part of his salary. If he comes back that will be good. If he doesn’t because he’s not going to get match fit, I hope he gets himself fit and well.

“If Ian comes back, we will be happy to see him. He’s a nice kid, he’s works hard and brings a bit of quality. So if he does come back, that will be good.”
Should return
Poveda joined Rovers on loan during the summer transfer window from Leeds.
He made only eight appearances for Rovers, but impressed everyone with his energy and talent.
His best performance probably has come against Sheffield United where he claimed a goal and an assist in the 3-1 win.
However, he picked up an injury from Bristol City, and hasn’t played since.
Blackburn tried to cut short his loan spell, but there was no such clause inserted in the deal to make it happen. With Rovers fighting for promotion this season, Poveda’s return will come as a welcome boost.
Leeds will be careful with his situation, and unless he is completely fit, there’s no question of sending him back to Rovers. At the moment, the club has not fixed any potential date for his return.
Poveda has two years remaining on his current deal at Leeds. He has already made 20 appearances for the club since joining in 2020 from Manchester City.
In other Leeds United news, the Barcelona move may be in doubt after the Blaugrana reportedly moved for a major European star.
