Three Brentford players set to miss Premier League clash v Leeds United
Brentford have confirmed that Frank Onyeka, Pontus Jansson and Shandon Baptiste will all miss the Bees’ trip to Leeds United on Sunday 22 January.
25-year-old Nigerian international Onyeka has been sidelined with a hamstring injury along with Jansson – and both will be out of the fixture against Jesse Marsch’s side (Brentford official website, 20 January).
Baptiste is believed to be on the way to recovery, however, the trip to West Yorkshire will come too soon for the 24-year-old midfielder. Summer signing Aaron Hickey is currently “touch and go” for the match after featuring in a friendly against Leyton Orient on Wednesday (18 January).
However, Thomas Frank will be able to call upon full-back Rico Henry, who missed the 2-0 victory over Bournemouth with a calf strain.
Brentford are not the team Leeds United want to be facing at the moment. Frank’s side are unbeaten in seven and have put their slow start to the campaign behind them. They will travel to Elland Road full of confidence and with little pressure on their shoulders due to their good recent form.
It’s now up to Jesse Marsch to ensure this group of players build on their demolition of Championship side Cardiff in the FA Cup. Leeds were electric in the first half and it has felt like that kind of performance has been in the pipeline. The challenge is to now replicate it on the Premier League stage.
This weekend could be huge in the Whites’ relegation fight. Everton and West Ham United are both playing each other at the London Stadium which could allow Leeds to put some significant distance between them and the bottom three, whilst having a game in hand.
It will be a tough task, but this is looking like another huge game for Marsch’s men in their fight to avoid being involved in the relegation conversation come the end of the season.
