Ian Wright has questioned Marcelo Bielsa’s tactics as Leeds United lost 1-0 at home to Brighton on Saturday afternoon.
A first-half strike from Neal Maupay proved to be the difference as the Whites struggled to carve out any clear cut chances against the relegation-threatened Seagulls.
Speaking on Match of the Day, Wright took aim at Bielsa’s tactics and admitted that he was surprised by Leeds’ approach to the game.
He said, “They looked right off it. I was thinking that they were going to try and play it through the midfield. I know they’re missing Kalvin Phillips.
“They were going long. It was very obvious to me that this is what the plan is. When you look at the forwards they’re not even looking to come forward and the midfield players aren’t looking to receive the ball.
“The defender is just looking to go long and I was thinking, ‘it was very surprising’. It was very easy for Brighton.”
Leeds failed to score at the third time of asking in 2021 as the new year hasn’t been kind to Bielsa’s men in its early stages.
The late January trip to St James’ Park to face an ailing Newcastle United looks vital if the Whites are to avoid being dragged back into a relegation fight.
Luckily, Steve Bruce’s side have been the worst team in the Premier League over the last six games and they recently handed Sheffield United their first win of the season.
It may be extreme to label that game as a must-win but questions will have to be asked if we don’t come away from the North East with all three points.
At the bare minimum we need to to see an improvement in performance as in the games against Tottenham, Crawley and Brighton we have been extremely poor.
Luckily Bielsa has plenty of time to get the squad firing again ahead of that late January trip to face the Magpies.
