‘There is a bit of fear’ – Leeds senior player shares concern about Championship season restart

Leeds United defender Gaetano Berardi has shared his concern that the chance of picking up injuries will increase once the Championship season resumes.

Leeds are currently set to continue their bid to win promotion to the Premier League on June 20 but will have to cram a large number of fixtures into a short space of time to complete the campaign.

Marcelo Bielsa operates with a small squad of senior players and is not the biggest fan of squad rotation, which is why the Whites have had a higher number of injuries with the Argentine in charge than usual.

Berardi is not a regular starter for Leeds with him starting just 11 Championship fixtures this season.

The former Sampdoria defender is someone who Bielsa relies upon if other players get injured but he has now shared his worries about getting injured himself in the coming weeks once the Championship restarts

“In England we are used to playing three games a week for several weeks in a row,” Berardi told Uno Uno Sport, as quoted by SampNews24.

“I understand that in other leagues, like in Italy, there may be problems. There is a bit of fear of injury, even for coaches it is not easy to prepare such close matches.

“You have to convince yourself mentally that playing often is not a problem, seeing things in a negative way does not help.”

Berardi’s concern is a fair one, especially as his contract is due to expire at the end of this month.

The one-time Switzerland international will not want to suffer an injury in any matches than run past June 30 because that could have an impact on him finding a new club.

We’d like to see Berardi stay for another season, especially if Leeds are in the Premier League but we can accept why he’d be concerned at the moment.
