‘We don’t know if that will be 100% possible’ – Kiko Casilla discusses Leeds restarting season
Kiko Casilla has admitted that it might not be completely possible for Leeds United to play their final nine matches of the season.
Last month, all football was put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic and we are now at the initial date that was set for it to return.
Due to the spread of the disease, it is unlikely that any football matches will be able to take place for months, which leaves the fate of the currently-suspended 2019/20 season unknown.
Championship-leaders Leeds have a lot to lose if the season is declared null and void and although Casilla, 33, wants to see the team play out their remaining fixtures, he is aware that it might not happen.
“The truth is that before all this happened, we had nine games left of the season and were leaders in the league,” Casilla told Onda Regional de Murcia, as translated by Sport Witness.
“We’d also managed five straight wins, so we were giving ourselves a good chance of promotion.
“Now we have to wait to see if we are finishing the season, but if we are, we have to return and treat the nine remaining games like a mini-season.
“We don’t know if that will be 100 per cent possible but if we can then we have to try to secure promotion because that was the objective. This team has everything to achieve it.”
It remains to be seen whether or not Casilla will play for Leeds United again due to him still having six games left of his eight-match ban for racist abuse.
Illan Meslier has stepped up in Casilla’s absence to keep clean sheets in wins against Hull and Huddersfield.
Meslier is on loan at Leeds and no one knows what will happen to loan contracts if the season is reconvened after June 30.
It could be that Casilla does end up playing if Meslier has to return to Lorient.
