‘That would be scandalous’ – Beckford hits out at idea that would destroy Leeds promotion bid
Jermaine Beckford has said it would be “scandalous” if the EFL took the decision to declare this season null and void after doing the same with a number of non-league seasons.
Beckford’s former club Leeds United are top of the Championship as it stands and have occupied the automatic promotion spots for almost the entire campaign with West Brom.
The Whites have nine matches to play of their season and are seven points clear of third. Before the coronavirus-enforced suspension of the league, Marcelo Bielsa’s men were also on a five-match winning streak that saw them move above the Baggies into top-spot as the club closed in on a return to the Premier League after a 16-year absence.
It is not going to be easy to decide what to do with the currently on-hold season, but Beckford is dead against the idea of scrapping the entire campaign as though it never happened.
“That would be scandalous,” Beckford told the Yorkshire Evening Post when asked if voiding the Championship season is a possibility.
“I genuinely and honestly don’t think that should be a viable option, I really don’t.
“If you think about it, if the whole season gets null and voided, all the TV revenue that has come in, all the transfers that have come in January, they shouldn’t be allowed to stand.
“All of that TV revenue money, close to a billion pounds possibly across all leagues – who is going to take the hit for that?
“I am sure someone is not going to want to just say alright we will just write off a billion plus pounds.”
Beckford makes a good point. There will be so many lawsuits opened up if this happens.
Liverpool shouldn’t be denied their first Premier League title. Leeds and West Brom shouldn’t be denied promotion to the top-flight. Coventry, Crewe and Barrow shouldn’t all have their promotion bids scrapped in a boardroom.
It would be one of the biggest injustices in football history if it happened.
