Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford has revealed that Kalvin Phillips is Marcelo Bielsa’s favourite player, in one sense at least.

In the latest Official Leeds United podcast, the 27-year-old was asked to pick the winners of some mid-season awards, including for goal of the season and the teacher’s pet award.

He naturally named his hattrick goal at Aston Villa before picking Phillips in the latter category based on a comment made by Bielsa previously.

Appearing on the podcast, Bamford said [31:20], “I’m going for Kalv [Phillips] because I remember Marcelo said that if his daughters were to marry a footballer or someone at Leeds, he would pick Kalvin.”

Reflecting on the first-half of the season

The podcast awards allowed Bamford to share his favourite moment of the season – the first win back in the Premier League against Fulham.

He also expressed the weird feeling the squad felt after the opening day defeat at Anfield, as Leeds proved they can go toe-to-toe with the best in the league.

It is worth looking back on matches such as that, as well as the draw with league leaders Manchester City, as it shows how much progress we have made.

Bamford deserves special recognition on that front.

He has scored ten goals in 19 league games despite this being his first regular spell playing in the Premier League.

Phillips too has earned an England call-up and has achieved an average WhoScored rating of 7.05 on top of making three tackles per game, which ranks him eighth in the league.

We have made good strides on the pitch since promotion, and with news of the 49ers investment this week there is plenty to be positive about.

The mid-week win against Newcastle hopefully means our bad run – and spell of bad performances – are firmly behind us, and we can now kick on in the second half of the campaign.
