BBC pundit Chris Sutton has said that Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford does not deserve an England call-up yet, despite his impressive form so far this season.
The 27-year-old has already scored six Premier League goals this season, including a hat-trick in Leeds’ 3-0 win over Aston Villa on Friday night.
Only Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Tottenham Hotspur’s Son have scored more league goals than the Leeds forward so far this term, but Sutton said that his form did not warrant an international call-up.
Speaking on BBC 606 (18:38), the goalscorer turned pundit said that there were other strikers currently in the squad that he preferred to Bamford.
Asked if the Nottingham Forest academy graduate should earn an England berth, Sutton said: “No he shouldn’t. Brilliant hat-trick, not easy scoring a hat-trick against Aston Villa Rob, only a few of us have done it, but would you have him ahead of Calvert-Lewin, Danny Ings, Harry Kane, would you?”
Kane and Ings have five and four Premier League goals to their name this season respectively, while fellow English attacker Michail Antonio has bagged three for West Ham United.
Bamford was inconsistent for much of last season scoring 16 goals in total, despite making 43 starts for the 2019-20 Championship winners and failing to appear in just one of the team’s league fixtures.
However, he has already shown massive improvement this year, with his shots per game and key passes per game up on last season, according to WhoScored. He was also awarded a perfect 10 for his display on Friday – a very rare WhoScored accolade.
The Englishman has also been offside less often – 0.7 times rather than 1.2 time per game, while he has been dispossessed 0.5 times per game this term compared to 1.1 per game last season.
Can he keep it up? He’s definitely on course for beating last season’s total if he can and if he keeps going at this rate, he will definitely catch the eye of Gareth Southgate.
The fact that Bamford is even being talked about as an England striker is a huge achievement for the Leeds player.
