Super Computer shares Leeds United relegation prediction as West Ham United win

Leeds United are still expected to avoid relegation despite their 4-1 defeat to Arsenal and West Ham beating Southampton, according to a super computer.

The Whites were beaten well by the league leaders on Saturday (1 April), and fell down to 17th place on Sunday (2 April) after the Hammers claimed a vital 1-0 win at home against bottom club Southampton.

And FiveThirtyEight ran the numbers after that game on the chances for each team to be relegated down to the Championship, and Leeds are still expected to survive the drop.

Javi Gracia’s side are being predicted to finish on 38 points at the end of the season, which would see them finish two points above the bottom three in 14th place.

The algorithm is backing Everton, Nottingham Forest and Southampton to be relegated at the end of the season.

Phew

Performances under Gracia have been largely encouraging, and we were never likely to get a win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium considering the way they’ve been playing.

When you factor in the fact that Willy Gnonto and Max Wober were out injured for the weekend game too, that makes it even less likely that we’d get a result but we still created chances going forward.

With big games coming up in the next week against Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace at Elland Road, two wins could really pull us away from the pack and help to get us away from the drop zone.

But if we turn in defensive showings like we did against Arsenal then we will give other teams the opportunity to score goals against us too, which always makes it far more difficult to win games.

Fans should still be confident, because we have plenty of quality to do what needs to be done at this point, and the numbers back us up. But it’s not done yet.
