Super Computer predicts Leeds United final table position and points total
Leeds are on course to finish just shy of the top half of the table this season after an impressive 2-1 away victory against Manchester City on Saturday.
Marcelo Bielsa’s men defied the odds when they beat the champions-elect after playing little over a half of football with ten men.
Liam Cooper’s red card left the side in a lurch, but instead of capitulating, Leeds rose to the task and scored a dramatic late winner, courtesy of Stuart Dallas, to secure all three points.
After the weekend’s matches, American prediction site FiveThirtyEight crunched the numbers to predict the Premier League table at the end of gameweek 38.
It said that Leeds will narrowly miss out on a top-half finish – securing the same number of points as Aston Villa but falling short on goal difference.
Top half still within reach
The interesting thing about the new predicted Premier League table is that Leeds have caught up with the pack ahead, with only a three-point difference up to Everton in eighth.
Everton were being tipped for a Champions League place earlier in the season.
It shows that if another result goes Leeds way, we could be on for an incredible finish.
After beating City, we were temporarily in 9th place for over 24 hours, but Arsenal’s win against Sheffield saw them leapfrog us.
Aston Villa, who are still a point behind, have a game in hand over us, and as FiveThirtyEight predicted, have a superior goal difference too.
Given the fact that Arsenal have gone deep into the Europa League, they could very well prioritise that competition over the league as it’s their only chance to qualify for the Champions League next season.
This could open the door for an unlikely top-half finish – something that seemed like a dream before the season began.
Reaching 40 points was the initial target and we achieved that after 29 games.
West Brom and Fulham, both of whom were promoted with us, are predicted to go back down.
The credit for this must go to Bielsa and our brilliant recruitment over the summer that has helped us compete against sides that have been in the top-flight for several years.
