Sun journo posts cryptic tweet on Kalvin Phillips int’l future, England squad announcement looms

The Sun journalist Alan Nixon has seemingly suggested that Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips is set to pledge his international allegiances to England.

The 24-year-old is uncapped at senior international level, but is eligible to play for either the Three Lions or Jamaica, who are understood to be keen on securing his services.

And with Gareth Southgate set to name his latest squad ahead of his side’s upcoming Nations League fixtures, Nixon has hinted that Phillips’ mind is already made up as to where his loyalties lie.

Writing on his personal Twitter account on Tuesday afternoon, the reliable reporter wrote: “Kalvin Phillips. England 1 Jamaica 0”.

He followed his tweet with a winking emoji.

England will play Iceland and Denmark next month.

The most obvious question that Nixon’s update begs is whether we’re about to see Phillips actually get the nod in Southgate’s squad.

We’ve already heard the manager speak about the possibility of the midfielder being included in his plans at some point, and if he’s trying to fend off competition from the Jamaican FA, the most effective way of doing that would be to hand him a competitive cap and tie him down that way.

Of course, it could well be that Nixon is suggesting that Phillips himself has come to a decision on the matter, but the timing of this update, just hours before the Three Lions unveil their latest squad would hint that, at the very least, this is something that Leeds fans will want to keep an eye on.
